The movie begins with a boy named Charlie, whose childhood incidents have landed him into clinical depression. After being discharged from a mental health care institution, Charlie tries to live a normal life at his high school. Being the freshman at the high school, he finds it difficult to connect with people and make friends. The only person he can connect well, is his English teacher, Mr. Anderson.
His two seniors, Sam and Patrick invite him to be a part of their social activities and they become good friends. Sam and Patrick try hard to make Charlie enjoy his high school life. Charlie falls in love with Sam and the fact that Sam is already involved with some other guy creates distance between them. But Sam eventually realizes that Charlie is the one for her and when they begin to get close to each other, Charlie’s past of his aunt sexually abusing him begins to haunt him and he goes into depression again.
