The story is set in an isolated reservation of the Navajo Indian tribe in Arizona in 1971. Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, a police officer, is tasked with investigating two brutal murders that initially appear to be unrelated. As Leaphorn delves deeper into solving the mystery, he finds himself haunted by his own terrifying memories from the past. Meanwhile, his partner Jim Chee struggles with personal challenges resulting from his time on the reservation. Despite their differences, the two men are compelled to put aside their personal conflicts and unite against the forces of darkness, battling not only external evil but also their own inner demons.
